If you’re havin’ religious problems I feel bad for you son,
I got 95 problems but a Pope ain’t one!
Hmmm.. I think Jay Z said it better!
So we know that Pope Leo X allowed John Tetzel to go about collecting Indulgences to pay off the building of St.Peters Basilica and to pay off Simony debts in Mainz. Martin Luther is pretty annoyed at Tetzel for doing this, mainly due to the fact that Luther was a very obedient follower of the faith and was worried about God’s wrath. This led Luther to set out a series of moves that would change the course of history forever.
Martin Luther wrote what is called the “95 Theses.” These were arguments made against the sale of indulgences and other practices of the church that he found to be wrong. He wrote the theses in Latin so that he could appeal to the educated masses, most notably, fellow clergymen as Latin was the chosen language of the scholars. Luther hoped that he could have a serious debate about how these problems could be fixed. He nailed the theses to the church door of Wittenberg Castle for the public to see.
Remember: Martin Luther NEVER intended for it to be a Rebellion against the Catholic Church!!.
Some things he wrote:
5. The pope has neither the will nor the power to remit any penalties beyond those imposed either at his own discretion or by canon law
21.Hence those who preach indulgences are in error when they say that a man is absolved and saved from every penalty by the pope’s indulgences.
86. Again: since the pope’s income to-day is larger than that of the wealthiest of wealthy men, why does he not build this one church of St. Peter with his own money, rather than with the money of indigent believers?

Things began to get out of hand …just a little!!
Martin Luther won some followers at this point. The theses was translated into German (the language of the common person) and with the aid of the printing press, it spread all over Germany very quickly. Many Germans stopped paying money to Rome, some even began to claim their priests were ignorant.
Now he has ROME TO CONTEND WITH. (ding ding Round 1!)
Rome is not too happy at this point!, Luther is kind of questioning it’s authority! but it’s ok,.. they can surely come to some sort of agreement! WRONG!
The Pope asks Luther to meet with Cardinal Cajetan in the hope he would change his ideas. Luther did meet him, Luther didn’t change his ideas!
The Pope organised a debate between Luther and theologian John Eck, in the debate Luther questioned the Pope’s actual authority! Not a good idea!
The Pope sent a special letter known as the Papal Bull ordering Luther to STOP HIS TEACHINGS OR FACE EXCOMMUNICATION. Luther burned the papal bull in front of everyone!
Martin Luther: Thug Life
In the end Martin Luther was so determined to change the ways of the Catholic church that he got himself Excommunicated from it…#ThugLife
